In the past 3 decades, African Americans had shows like The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, Good Times, Martin and Living Single to look forward to. With Black TV shows becoming almost non-existent, TV One is looking to fill a part of that void with a new comedy series Love That Girl.
The 2010 TV sitcom written by Martin Lawerence and Bentley Kyle Evans stars Tatyana Ali as Tyana Jones- a 20 something divorcee that works in the Realtor business. Now this newly single woman must figure out a way to balance two very important things-life and love.
Tuesday’s TV debut of “Love That Girl” brought audiences two episodes-both the pilot and 2nd episode titled “My Guy Friend”.’
The first impression of “Love That Girl” wasn’t good as hoped. Tatyana Ali makes a fine lead, but the what the show lacks is a strong supporting cast. The other problem that stems from “Love That Girl” is the stereotypical and over-the-top gay friends, and a “comedian” brother who just isn’t funny.
Another major flaw in this new series is the source of material. Watching the actors deliver lines that were just cringe-worthy, made it unbearable to watch at times. It honestly felt the directors had to go extreme lengths just get a laugh-when in the end it just comes off as desperate.
The series has potential, but if “Love That Girl” is to truly survive on TV, some definite changes need to be made-and quick. Otherwise, the show’s fate isn’t looking too bright.
