Weekend’s estimates are in and Disney’s The Princess and The Frog hit #1 at the box office. The newly awaited film introduced audiences to Disney’s first African American princess and the return of 2-D animation. Surprisingly the film brought in only $ 27 million which is fair, but with a budget of $105 million that’s hardly impressive. It may be premature to predict the fate of The Princess and the Frog as it still has time to become an box office success overtime. But you have to wonder if the estimates will affect Disney’s decision to produce more 2D Animation in the future.

So exactly why are estimates so low for the new 2-D animated film? The Princess and the Frog has received favorable reviews from both Critics and Fans of film. Has the controversy surrounding the film affected it? Or are kids nowadays just not as impressed with hand drawn animation?

It’s fairly obvious that children would prefer 3D animated. If you take a look at others film released this year(or previous year for that matter) you’ll see UP(Pixar) brought in 68M it’s opening weekend. Even the computer-animated film Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs(20th Century Fox) brought in low numbers its opening weekend but still manged to become one of the highest grossing films of 2009.

Whatever the case of may be. There’s still a small glimpse of hope for 2-D animation. Disney has already started the artwork of its next film The Snow Queen.
