If you’re looking to run a potential business you have to ready to accept the ups and downs that come with it. Hey, no one ever said it would be easy.
The big question this film asks: What if a student didn’t drop out of school?
In 2009, Mary Mazzio, director of Ten9Eight would create a positive documentary that focuses on the lives of 7 young entrepreneurs -all from different backgrounds who are competing toward one common goal-a $10,000 dollar prize.
Now, the $10,000 dollars is awareded by NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship) so that it will help the young hopeful who wins an advance in starting up their respective business.
In the first half of the The 2-hour long documentary, viewers will begin to learn more about the 7 entrepreneurs’ business and their back story. Watching Ten9Eight, I found myself astonished at how well-thought out their businesses were, especially with them being so young.
The 2nd hour of Ten9Eight follows the 7 finalists as they head off to the Big Apple-New York City. The business plan competition, which consists of 3 rounds and 35 participants in total, is stiff and the judges are tough. But, these hopefuls have to put their game faces on and make an impression if they want their dream business to become a reality. It was quite evident while watching Ten9Eight that most of the kids introduced earlier would not all make it. Nevertheless, I felt invested in the young entrepreneurs. Just in barely an hour I learned so much about their struggles and how much their business means to them. It’s like you want them all to succeed, but you realize that it’s a competition and that there can be only one winner.
Along the way, movie goers will even be introduced to several NFTE alums who went on to run successful businesses-a nice touch by Mary Mazzio.
Closing Thoughts:
After the credits began to roll, I felt a sense of motivation. Ten9Eight is a very informative yet empowering documentary. Anyone regardless of age, can learn a lot from watching it. The kids of the film were inspirational in every sense of the word- Mazzio couldn’t have picked a better crop. Furthermore, Ten9Eight gives viewers at home hope-hope that doing anything is possible. Director Mary Mazzio not once glamorized the business competition, every flub and tear was there. The documentary clearly shows that running a business isn’t an easy feat. It takes a lot of dedication and a sense of hard work. But as Ten9Eight demonstrates, if you have the perseverance but more importantly the proper education-anyone can achieve a business or dream-Geordae
