Cycle 9 winner of America’s Next Top Model, Saleisha Cooper is featured in the latest issue of Seventeen Magazine. Cooper discuses her childhood and the perks of being a model.
What was your childhood really like:
My Grandma basically raised me. I lived with her until I was like 17. We have a great relationship and I respect her, but at the same time I really, really wanted that perfect family-with a white picket fence and the soccer van. My parents had me really young; My dad was 17 and my mom was 16. So it was hard for them. My mom wasn’t at the point of her life where she could raise me. She just didn’t think she could. She’s bipolar and went through a bipolar stage after I was born, and she used alcohol and drugs to cover it up. And my dad went through this thing with drugs and alcohol, so he really wasn’t there.
How are you parents doing now?
My dad’s sober. He graduated from a culinary school. He’s a head chief at a restaurant in L.A. My mom is getting better. I wish things were better for her. Since she’s bipolar, we go through a lot of ups and downs. We have a great relationship, and I love her so much. But there are times where she gets mad so fast, and then she gets depressed, and she’ll hang the phone up on me-and I won’t understand why she’s like that. But it’s just her disorder.
