I’ll go ahead and admit it: I was weary about the PG-13 Rating for Drag Me To Hell. It cheapens what you can and can’t do in Horror Films. Where’s the fun in that? But this is Sam Rami we’re talking about. So it couldn’t be that bad right? Thanks to his previous work in film I was willing to give this horror flick a chance. Drag Me To Hell is a different and pleasantly refreshing offering to today’s horror genre. There have been many recycled film ideas nowadays-especially in horror. So, when a new idea sets fourth-it’s always welcome. It’s interesting that Rami’s Drag Me To Hell in many ways share certain similarities to his iconic Evil Dead Series. Let’s see how exactly: Gross out moments? Check. Cheap scare tactics? Check. Humor? Plenty of it.
What I can appreciate most about the direction of Drag Me To Hell-the film doesn’t take itself too seriously. Trust me there will beparts in the film where you’ll jump unexpectedly. But there are certainly plenty of campy and over-the-top parts in Drag Me To Hell that will get a laugh or two out of you. Depending on what you consider to be funny. All in all a fairly nice balance of scares and laughs provided for the audience.
Casting for this 2009 horror film couldn’t have been better. Appointing actress Lorna Raver as Slyvia was a perfect choice. The choice of makeup and the acting by Raver trump any modern day horror villain.
Alison Lohman plays lead as Christine. An often caring but sometime selfish character. For her first lead role, Lohman did fairly well conveying the different emotions of her character- whether it be showing fear or tackling some of over-the-top moments presented in the film. I did see a believable connection between Alison and her co-star Justin Long. Maybe the two young actors will team up again in the future?
If you can appreciate gross out humor and often wacky film moments in Drag Me To Hell, you’ll enjoy it. If you not, you may want to look elsewhere.
