Many have taken offense to the KFC advertisement that has aired in Australia. The barely 1 minute commercial ad shows a fan of the Australian Cricket Team sitting on the side with fans of the West Indies Cricket Team. To lighten the mood, the Aussie fan breaks out a bucket of KFC chicken. The West Indies Cricket fans immediately stop what they’re doing and begin to feast.
So was the KFC commercial done in poor taste? Or is it all just one big misunderstanding? Internet users weighed their opinion on this controversial matter:
Uh, for starters, these people aren’t supposed to be African Americans, they’re from the West Indies, so don’t stereotype every dark skinned person as an African American, that’s racist in itself. Secondly, when this ad aired, Australia was playing the W.Indies in the cricket, they were the opposing team, being seated as a single person in a crowd of the opposition is the idea behind this ad, it wouldn’t matter if they were Kiwis, Poms, W.Indies, Pakistanis, Indian etc.”
They look like any passionate group of sports fans to me. If that had been the English Barmy Army, would anyone have said boo about it?The shirt he wears is a key giveaway. That’s from an era when Australia’s biggest cricketing rivals were the West Indies. The age of the actor and the shirt he wears would be a key indication of the target demographic. There’s nothing negative about the fans depicted in this ad.
This is an ad for KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN, they should know better. and that’s really why it’s racist . American culture is world culture at this point. The world over watches our TV shows, movies & eat our Kentucky Fried Chicken McDonalds etc. I get the Australian Cricket concept, make no mistake. that doesn’t mean that this commercial is ok to air. it reinforces a WORLD stereotype about black people that originates in America, yes.
